Contacts between Russians and Persians have a long history, extending back more than a millennium ago. There were known commercial exchanges as early as the 8th century AD between Persia and Russia.
Diplomatic relations between Russia and Iran date back to 1521, when the Safavid Shah Ismail I sent an emissary to visit the Czar Vasili III.
After the islamic revolution of Iran in 1979, iran’s relationship has gotten better & better. While others gave up on Iran after 1979 on so many things including Bushehr nuclear power plant, Russia didn’t hesitate to take over & be of assistant . Russia has built & contributed to quite a few grand scale projects like Isfan steel production plant & other large projects.
Russia is the biggest country & neighbour of Iran to the north, it has the 6th largest economy in the world & and a very strong ally to Iran on so many different issues.
Russia and Iran also share common borders & interest in Central Asia. This common interest has led the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to extend to Iran observer status in 2005, and offer full membership in 2006. Iran’s relations with the organization, which is dominated by Russia and China, represents the most extensive diplomatic ties Iran has shared since the 1979 revolution. Iran and Russia have co-founded the Gas Exporting Countries Forum along with Qatar.
As Iran and Russia economic and geopolitical relations have improved over the years, Russia and the EEU have opted for Iran to join the Eurasian Economic Union as well. Currently, only one EEU country, Armenia, has direct land borders with Iran. Iran currently remains a key partner of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Russia & Iran for very many reasons have much common interests to share; they rank as number 1&2 top natural gas reserve holders in the world & both are among the top few oil producers as well. Russia’s energy is essential to the european consumers & Iran’s energy also has supplied a good portion of china & India’s consumer markets. In general both countries are supper important to the energy & security of the world specially East & Europe; Russia on the other hand has large population of near 150 million people & Iran has some of the best quality agricultural goods & other products that can supply Russian consumer market. Russia is already supplying Iran with many Industrial goods & has made various investments throughout the country.
